Francis Bizoza Bigirimana aka The African Travelling Teacher recently hosted an inspiring Cultural Canvas engagement session at New Casa Gorilla Lodge and Campsite, bringing together education, culture, and global collaboration in a unique learning experience. The Cultural Canvas Project, originally launched in 2022, is a global citizenship and visual arts collaboration linking students from the Western Academy of Beijing and Nyarutembe Community Secondary School in Uganda. The initiative was born from a connection between educator Angelia and Francis Bizoza Bigirimana, widely known as The African Travelling Teacher, alongside visual arts teacher Daniel Avila. Initially planned as a classroom talk on infrastructure in Africa for Grade 8 and 9 students in Beijing, the collaboration was disrupted by renewed COVID-19 restrictions. Rather than ending the engagement, the educators reimagined the initiative into a dynamic cultural exchange that would connect students from both continents through art, storytelling, and shared learning. During the activity hosted at New Casa Gorilla Lodge, the African Travelling Teacher highlighted how the Cultural Canvas Project has grown into a powerful platform where students share artistic practices, traditions, and everyday experiences. The project, which began through the Art for Enlightenment after-school club at the Western Academy of Beijing, encouraged students to use creative expression as a bridge between cultures. Through their efforts, students created large-scale woodcut carvings which were printed and auctioned to raise funds for educational technology. The initiative successfully raised USD 2,000, enabling tablets and essential learning tools to be purchased locally in Uganda. These devices now help students document their creative processes, share cultural craft techniques, and engage in global dialogue with their peers abroad. The tablets were installed with the Kolibri offline learning platform, allowing students at Nyarutembe Community Secondary School to access learning materials and share videos showcasing traditional Ugandan crafts such as basket weaving, mat making, stool crafting, and clay work. Hosting the engagement at New Casa Gorilla Lodge provided a meaningful environment where culture, education, and community interaction could come together. The session emphasized how technology, creativity, and collaboration can bridge geographical distances and create lasting connections between young learners across the world. Today, the Cultural Canvas Project continues to demonstrate that art, storytelling, and shared knowledge can inspire global citizenship and mutual understanding between communities.
Maize Roast Experience at New Casa Gorilla Lodge and Campsite: Celebrating Culture, Community, and Campfire Moments

The Birth of the Idea The idea for the Maize Roast activity was inspired by Mr. Kenneth Hangimana of Kenlinks Tours, a passionate traveler and self-proclaimed lover of roasted maize. His appreciation for this simple yet beloved African snack sparked the concept of turning maize roasting into a cultural experience for visitors. At New Casa Gorilla Lodge and Campsite, we were truly humbled by this initiative. What began as a love for roasted maize quickly transformed into a meaningful activity that celebrates local traditions while creating memorable moments for our guests. The Chief Roaster The highlight of the evening was the expertise of Ms. Gloria Kyizanye, who served as the Chief Roaster for the event. With great enthusiasm and skill, she guided participants through the traditional process of roasting maize over an open flame. From selecting the perfect cobs to rotating them carefully above the fire, Gloria shared tips and techniques that ensured every participant could enjoy perfectly roasted maize. Her engaging style made the experience both educational and entertaining, leaving guests with new skills and plenty of smiles. A Lesson from the African Traveling Teacher Adding a deeper cultural perspective to the evening was the African Traveling Teacher, who reminded everyone that roasting maize is more than just preparing food, it is part of Africa’s rich cultural heritage. He shared stories of how maize roasting has long been a social activity across many African communities. Families and friends gather around fires, sharing stories, laughter, and wisdom while preparing food together. For many travelers, this moment provided a meaningful glimpse into the traditions that continue to shape everyday life across the continent. Culture, Stories, and Perfect Roasting The evening also featured a lively riddle session led by Gitaho Vian, the proprietor of Kamere Tours, who engaged guests with traditional African riddles around the campfire. His interactive session brought laughter and friendly competition while highlighting the importance of riddles in African oral traditions, where they are used to entertain, teach wisdom, and sharpen the mind. Adding to the experience, Bruce, the Tour Guide, guided participants on the art of proper maize roasting. With practical tips on how to position and rotate the maize over the fire, he ensured that everyone achieved that perfect golden roast. His guidance helped guests appreciate that roasting maize over a campfire is both a skill and a cherished part of the experience.
